Kansas City Royals second baseman Esteban German capitalized on a wild pitch by New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera to score a game-winning run in last night's rain-delayed matchup at Yankee Stadium.
German hit a double off Rivera in the second at-bat of the ninth inning. Rivera then gave up a single to Mitch Maier that let German advance to third before a pitch got past catcher Jose Molina. The Royals won 4-3 in a game that was delayed 1 hour, 31 minutes by rain.
Royals right-hander Gil Meche gave up one run and six hits in his six innings. Reliever Ron Mahay walked two and allowed two runs in the seventh, tying the game at three before he was replaced by Leo Nunez. Joakim Soria was credited with the save for Kansas City.
Andy Pettitte went seven innings for the Yankees, giving up six hits and allowing three runs. He struck out seven and walked four. Bobby Abreu singled to right in the seventh, bringing home Johnny Damon. Alex Rodriguez brought home the tying run with a sacrifice fly to center.
The loss was the sixth in seven games for the Yankees (64- 58), who are third in the American League East, 10.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays. Kansas City (55-67) trails the American League Central, 13.5 games behind the division-leading Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins.
Cubs Edge Marlins
In the National League Cubs pinch-hitter Daryle Ward swatted a three-run homer in the ninth to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 6-5 win over the Florida Marlins. Florida reliever Kevin Gregg came into the ninth with a two-run lead. He walked Mark DeRosa and allowed a single by Reed Johnson before Ward hit his third home run of the season in his lone at-bat of the night.
DeRosa had a home run, his 14th this year, with one on in the fourth off Kansas City starter Josh Johnson. Royals third- baseman Jorge Cantu got his 21st homer of the season off Chicago right-hander Carlos Zambrano in the third.
The Cubs (75-47) still have the lead in the NL Central after the loss. The Marlins (63-60) are in third in the NL East, 3.5 games behind the New York Mets.
The Mets held on after scoring twice in the first inning to edge the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 last night, gaining their fourth- straight win and protecting their lead in the National League East.
Mets Win on Road
Right-hander Mike Pelfrey held the Pirates scoreless through seven innings on the mound at Pittsburgh's PNC Park. It was the first time this season the Mets have won four road games in a row. Pittsburgh's Jason Davis gave up both Mets runs in the first, then held New York scoreless for the next six.
Mets reliever Duaner Sanchez gave up a home run to Jack Wilson in the eighth, the only batter he faced before being pulled in favor of Pedro Feliciano, who finished the inning. Aaron Heilman pitched the ninth for his third save of the season.
Pelfrey gave up seven hits, struck out one and didn't allow any walks. The Mets, fresh from a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals, continue their four-game stand against the Pirates tonight at PNC.
The win kept the Mets (66-56) ahead of Philadelphia in the National League East after the Phillies (65-57) beat the Sam Padres 1-0. Pittsburgh (55-67) is fifth in the NL Central, 20 games behind first-placed Chicago.
Cleveland Indians left-hander Cliff Lee threw a complete game against the Los Angeles Angels to get his 17th win of the season. The 3-2 victory brings Lee within three wins of becoming the Cleveland's first 20-game winner since 1974, according to MLB.com.
Lee gave up eight hits, including a home run to Angels Juan Rivera in the fifth, struck out six and walked two. The Indians took the lead in the sixth inning after Asdrubal Cabrera drew a bases-loaded walk from Los Angeles reliever Jose Arredondo. Cleveland held on to take the lead in their three-game series, which continues tonight at Progressive Field.
